Kandee Johnson: Dirty Jobs

Like Mike Rowe: Dirty Jobs...but way more fun....ha ha ha

DIRTY JOB: Make-Up for National Ariat Boots,  Ad Campaign..featuring the countries top bull riders...at the richest rodeo in the west...

HOW DIRTY: well, it was about 103 degrees outside, we pretty much stood in cow and horse poop (aka manure) all day long and I was about 7 months pregnant with my Blake when we did this shoot. I felt like I needed 2 showers when I came home from all the sweat and  "manure dust" that I was covered in when I came home at night.
(I think it was a 5 day shoot...so 5 days of 100+ degree weather...and poop dust! ha ha ha)

JOB PERKS: it was at a rodeo, while the state fair was going on...so I got to eat funnel cake and roasted corn! I taught my mom how to do make-up for shoots years ago, so whenever her and I get to work together on a shoot or tv show, I love it, and she worked with me on this...we had so much fun together.

I wish I had all the pictures from this shoot...they were so awesome, that this ad campaign won the International Graphis Gold Award...

My favorite part was that I got to make all the cowboys look sweaty and dirty, when they'd show up all clean in the morning...
FAKE SWEAT:To make them look sweaty I used a combination of sponged on Glycerin and misted on Vitamin E oil..

FAKE DIRT:To make them look "DIRTY"...I used a combo of dark brown and black, crushed up eyeshadows from Revlon & Maybeline...and our "secret dirt recipe" of finely crushed rocks, clay and colored powder..

SPECIAL TRICK:
when you see photos like this where a bright light is shining from behind the athlete...
you have to put black eyeshadow behind their ears...I put a black grease paint down first, then go over with black eyeshadow...to make sure the light doesn't shine through their ears...no one want glowing ears! ha ha

The best part about this job, besides working with my mama, was that all those cowboys were the most polite, sweet, well-mannered guys I've ever met...each one called me "ma'am" and thanked me, even though each one hated getting make-up on...even when they were way older than me!

I had to have my make-up removing wipes right when they were done with their shot...because none of htem even wanted to wear the "fake dirt"! ha ha

These were some of the toughest, fearless guys...they ride bulls, have broken or crushed almost most of their bones...and they were some of the happiest people too!

FEAR is something that if you think about the problem or thing you are afraid of, it just gets bigger and bigger...
but if you think about, dwell on your hope for the future...something positive instead...that positive thought leads the way to your greatness...

The cowboys didn't sit ans say..man the bull is scary, weighs more than a car....could kill me...they said, "I'm gonna go out there and show em what I can do!"....

today...don't let dwell on your problems...think about something good and go out and show the world what you can do!

fake dirt and manure...
your friend kandee

kandee, you don't know how much you have helped me throughout these past 9 or so months of me knowing about your videos and blogs. there have been some really bad things that have happened. and friday night i had a very bad night. and seeing this blog made me realize that i can't worry about how many times bad things happen (and from the same person). and i just have to think about the great things that have come out of the past. thank you so much for helping me kandee. it means so much to me.

Hey Kandee,
I just wanted to say thanks for all the awesome videos and tutorials. I always enjoy reading what's new and seeing your awesome transformations! I saw on your website that you were asking on Twitter and Facebook about what people would rather see, an eye makeup or hair tutorial. However, I don't have either of those accounts, so hopefully you don't mind me posting here that I'd love to see the hair tutorial! Keep up the good work! I hope you and your family are doing great! You newest little one is sooooooo beautiful! :)
Much Love ~Keely

Hiya Kandee! I've been following you for over a year now and have always wanted to leave a comment but could never think of anything interesting to tell you, lol. I loved this post because I live just south of San Antonio and we just finished up with the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. It was neat to know that you got to put your skills to the test on some of the cowboys I just watched compete. Anyways, I hope you and your family (littles included)are doing well and I look forward to more of your sunshine here on the web!

I agree with the previous comments! These "behind the scenes secrets", and make up tricks to look certain ways is so interesting!

I have a make-up tutorial suggestion/question. Okay, so have you cried a lot the night before and wake up to PUFFY EYES AND SWOLLEN LIDS?! Well, I wanted to know if there are any make-up tricks or solutions to make it less puffy? Haha. Thank you!

Kandee,
That was awesome to know that you worked on the cowboys for the Ariat posters. Stran Smith is a great guy, as well as sold out for God. He's a got a great testimony on youtube. Just wanted to let you know that you just bless my heart so much. You're such a bright light for your faith. Having true faith, leaves no room for fear and you're right about the cowboys not fearing their next bull. My husband rides bulls and it's how we make our living and I know he wouldn't be successful at it if he did'nt trust God to protect him.
Just wanted to tell you to keep it up, your a bright shining light in a world that can be very dark.
God bless you and all you're family.

Hiya Kandee,

I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and am going through chemo. Can you do a video on how to keep a wig secured to your head? I have very thin hair at this point, two wigs, and a wig stocking. I haven't gone out in the wig yet, as I can still cover up the bald spots with a hat. I'm just trying to get prepared for when I have to wear it. I used your videos to apply my own wedding makeup this summer, and I figured you'd know about wigs as much as makeup :-) Thanks, and check out my blog if you get a chance. http://andthentherewasoneboob.blogspot.com
