Marilyn Monroe Make-Up Secrets!

Here's a fun treat! After lots of research on Marilyn Monroe, her make-up artist, Allan "Whitey" Snyder, who did her make-up from her very first screen test at 20th Century Fox to, even doing her funeral make-up....I present to you:
MARILYN MONROE'S MAKE-UP LOOK & HER BEAUTY SECRETS
BEFORE MAKE-UP TRICKS       &    AFTER
(how to go from "natural Marilyn Monroe to glam icon, Marilyn Monroe)

(that not even Whitey would share some of these tips with Marilyn! ha ha)
 SKIN:
Marilyn used Erno Laszlo Active pHelityl Cream (you can still get it here) or vaseline to moisturize (I  use Alba Un-Petroleum, much better for your skin than Vaseline!)
 FOUNDATION:
Marilyn Monroe wore Elizabeth Arden Pat-A-Creme foundation or foundation from Erno Laszlo, she also used the Erno Laszlo Duo-Phase Face Powder (which you can still buy! CLICK HERE to see!)

MARILYN'S HIGHLIGHTING TRICKS:
She used a highlighting powder (I can't find anywhere what the name was!)..to highlight certain spots on her face that she liked to highlight!
I used SHELL (a cream color) from MAC to highlight, then I went over it with SILVER DUSK highlight powder from MAC. You could even use a frosty eyeshadow to dab on highlight areas I show above!

MARILYN'S LIP TRICK:
She used up to 5 different red lipsticks at once to get her perfect red mouth. All reds were a bright blue-red, because the film cameras back then had a way of making everything orangey.
You can see in the video, but her make-up artist would draw above the top lip curve with a white eyeliner to make it look larger and more highlighted.
Also, she extended her top lip liner out at an angle above her lower lip (take a peek at the pic above!).
*She also fully drew in the curved, rounded bow-shaped mouth on the top. And she used a darker red lipliner to shade the underside of the lower lip and the outer edges to make her lips look even larger and more "sexy-pouty"! (see the picture above of her without make-up, her lips are totally different shaped than after her make-up!)
*They would also dab a white eyeshadow in the center of her lips to make them look fuller and grab the light, as you can see in the photo above!)

MARILYN EYEBROWS:
Marilyn's eyebrows were drawn into very pointed eyebrows, which was because she thought she had a wide forehead, and adding such sharp peaks makes it look like your forehead doesn't take up so much room!
MARILYN'S EYELINER:
*Whitey would draw in a white triangle on the outer corner of her eye with a white eyeliner, and blend it outwards.
*He also lined the waterline of her lower eye with white eyeliner, this was a very popular trick in that era, to make the eyes look bigger and brighter on camera!
*Next they usually used a brown eyeliner (contrary to all the popular Marilyn looks that use black), and drew the liner like I show in the red above, and slightly below the eye-LEAVING the WHITE SPACE on the corner UNTOUCHED. This trick makes the eye look wider, in combination with drawing the top eyeliner out longer.

MARILYN MONROE'S EYELASHES:
They would take a full strip of lashes and cut them in half so that they were just on the outer corners, like a demi-wispie lash. I used URBAN DECAY LASHES in LURE.

CONTOURING & EYESHADOW:
I show you this much better than I can type-explain (ha ha) in the video below!

COSTUME GOODIES: (what I used in the video):
you can even get the white MARILYN MONROE dress!
COSTUME INC is offering a coupon code for 10% off orders of $40 or more, just enter:
kandee10 (you can buy any costume goodies there!)
(and no they did not pay me...this is just something nice they offered all my followers!)

sit back and enjoy a glamorous adventure into Marilyn
Make-Up with me!

diamonds and red lips....marilyn, I mean, kandee (ha ha ha)

THIS WAS GREAT! I love all your videos. I love makeup as well I have done make up for weddings and proms and just for fun. Thinking about becoming a pro and going to school for it. I have never charged for my help but in a few weeks I have a makeup gig where I am getting paid for it and more and more ppl r asking me to do makeup for them ppl I don't even know that just heard of me. but I don't have a clue of what to charge. Any Ideas the next gig is to teach a teen and her aunt how to do different looks and contouring. You inspire me.

LOOOVE LAZLO! Especially the special soap and the tinted normalizer shake it. It's like a tinted toner and oil control wrapped in one product.

I love how you show all the little tricks in the blog aside from the video! It trains me as an aspiring make-up artist to look for those little tricks...and how to replicate certain things.

Yay!

Hey Kandee!

This probably isn't the right place to ask but I'm going to ask anyway =]

What would you say are the "essential" brushes for eye makeup, and where could I get good ones on a budget?

Thanks! I love all of your videos! They make me smile!

This is awwweeeeeessssssooooooommmmmeeeeee!!!I love that you gave us a play by play with that red marker thingy. I work really well when people show me hands on and since you can't do this for me, this is the next best. I am just a school teacher, not a makeup artist and found this soooooo helpful! You rock Kandee and you do a great Marilyn although I think you are more beautiful as yourself :) Peace, Meli

Hi Kandee!
I am in school, but I want to be a makeup artist sooo bad! You are so inspiring!

I was wondering how to tell what the undertones of a red are?? You said they used blues? How do you know??

HI Kandee!!! I wrote to you before but I know that you are extremely busy. I hope you are not too busy to get back with me on this one. It's an emergency, I have so many question to ask you but it escape my mind at this moment except for: COULD YOU TELL ME A GOOD TANNING LOTION/CREAM OR WATEVER...because I have shaving bumps on my legs n it only look presentable is if my legs are tan. I'm asian and I have like olive yellow skin w/ brown eyes. I'm not creative enough to put colors together to match my skin. Could you come up w/ some sort of a signature look for me if I email you a pic? I have a wedding party to go to this Nov. and I need to look FAB-U-LOUS!! haha

Thank you so much. I really love all your videos, it's so detailed. I just wish there's an easier way to keep in touch w/ you. =)
